Family Fashion Tips

It’s shocking that I even like fashion. If my family had their way I would be dressing like the woman to the right. I learned necessary lessons growing up like: wear blaze orange if you’re going into the woods during hunting season and if you’re cold put on a sweater. We’re a practical bunch and it’s hard for me to wear clothing that goes beyond its aesthetic purpose. I was neither raised to be a pretty, pretty princess, nor did I have a fashion maven mother to look up to. What I did learn from my mother was brutal honesty, which explains why people love to go shopping with me. I have no filter. My sister tells the story of shopping in the Buckle with me. The salesclerk had just raved how fabulous the jeans made her look, when I walked up and said are you serious? She looks like she has a load of shit in her pants.

My style is practical pretty. I wear dresses because they are easy and I hate my thighs, cardigans because I live in San Francisco and everyone layers, indoor scarves for the same reason, and flat boots because I’m on my feet all day. I don’t wear painful shoes or outfits that would require strapless bras. This is my style and it works for me. I admire anyone who can find their personal style and I will probably feature a lot of those people on this blog.

Dear Reader,

I realized this morning that a post about 90210 is no way to start a new blog. By way of introduction, my name is Lynn and I am keeping this fashion blog in conjunction with starting a vintage clothing business via Etsy.com (www.SophieCaseVintage.etsy.com). My business will be launching later this week or early next week. I have so much work to do…

This blog will always have one foot in the fashion door, but considering my tangential nature, I suspect it will lend itself to narrative diatribes and meanderings around wonderful San Francisco. I love vintage clothing and the stories it can tell. I love how an outfit establishes a relationship between yourself and the person viewing you. What I long for most in a fashion blog is more information(or speculation) about the people wearing the clothes, rather than the clothes wearing the people. And also a place to pose questions like “Would it be terribly wrong to snip apart a Valentino?”

Wait…don’t answer that question…

I’m going to hell.
XoXo, Lynn

90210: A re-visitation

Last week when I should have been writing blog posts (seriously, every slot in my day planner reads: write blog posts), I was instead watching the first season of the original 90210. When I was in middle school this show was strictly forbidden under the disguise that it was after my bed time. Re-visiting this show made me feel like I am doing something naughty. Now, living on the west coast, I don’t understand why my parents didn’t force me to watch the show. Sure, Kelly’s mom snorts coke in episode 2, but the overwhelming theme of each episode is that people from the Midwest are good (I’m from Wisconsin) and people from California are a-moral, selfish pricks who secretly have good hearts that can only be unearthed through important lessons learned from Brandon and Brenda. I kept waiting for a slutty Brenda or a lecherous Brandon with no satisfaction. Brenda’s idea of slutty are form fitting, off the shoulder numbers that I covet (well… after I get past the fact that Dylan is only wearing one of his overall straps). Is it too early to lust over outfits from the early 90’s?

(I stole this pic from another blogger www.serialdrama.typepad .com. Her comment was: “This outfit was truly a cry for help. If only someone had noticed and performed an intervention, perhaps he never would have turned to the bottle.”)
